Home School Support

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

TACHE, Tyler Area Christian Home Educators, is a support group for home school families in the Tyler area. TACHE schedules events for family to get together. Not only do they have fun and educational events for children, but they also have support groups for parents.

It is nice to have a place to be encouraged and to socialize with other people. TACHE has mother’s day out, where you can share with other moms your experiences in home schooling, and hear moms share their stories also.

TACHE has many rules and guide lines to teach young men and women respect towards themselves and towards their elders. The program is completely based on the Bible and the principles from the Bible. It is the core of the education taught through TACHE.

I am a young mom and already have decided to home school my children. I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to math and science. TACHE has people who will teach certain subjects for your children. Also your children do not have to miss out on extra curricular activities, TACHE has basketball camps, and they get you in touch with people that teach dance, art, creative writing, and many different musical instruments.

When you are a senior in high school, the graduation ceremony is extremely important. TACHE has a ceremony, and many senior classes get together and plan events, and even the senior trip. The classes elect a class president and secretary, like most high schools. Your teenager can have the experiences that they would have in a school, if not more. The classes all have events that they can reach out to the community and show the love of the Lord. The class plans both a dance and their graduation.

Education is extremely important and if you are planning to home school your children I completely recommend that you join a home school group like TACHE. You can build lasting friendships, and it is very important to have the support of others, as you give your children the best education.

Super 1 Foods in Tyler Texas

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Brookshires grocery companies are great stores, and only sell the freshest produce, but the food is very expensive. Brookshires opened up a grocery store that sells all groceries at the lowest prices possible. Super 1 Foods sells all off brand products like Food Club, Full Circle, Golden Brook, Top Care, and Valu Time. The store has all your food needs and also has a great pharmacy.

Food Club is one of the main brands sold through out the store. From laundry detergent, to canned vegetables, to breakfast cereal, you will find this brand throughout the whole store. Most of the Food Club products are not that bad. I mean the sodas are flat and the toilet paper is horrible, but the food is pretty much the same products.

Full Circle is another brand name that Super 1 sells from the store. This brand is a member of the Organic Trade Association. Organic is the way to go! The food tastes fresher, even the canned vegetables and pasta sauce. Organic foods are much better for you and your family. Full circle has no additives, artificial ingredients, or artificial coloring. Full Circle promises “All-Around Goodness.”

The pharmacy carries the off brand name, Top Care. Top Care is a non-prescription medication. Top Care has everything that the brand names have, except the price. They sale anything from pain medication, cough drops, first aid, to skin care shampoos and conditioners, and feminine products. Top Care has everything you need for you and your family to stay healthy.

If you shop in Tyler you probably have seen the Goldenbrook Farms Ice Cream before in the frozen section in most grocery stores. The ice cream is made here in east Texas, right off of 271. The ice cream is rich and sold in many different ice cream products, light flavors, sherbet, and the many different premium flavors. You can get a great treat at a low price.

Super 1 Foods is going green. They sell reusable bags that reduce the use of plastic and paper bags. Super 1 sells and uses energy conserving products, like light bulbs. They are doing what they can to take care of “our people, our communities, and the environment”.

Living at an apartment, my mail box is bombarded by sale circulars from Super 1. It is easy to get great deals by using coupons from the circulars or off the internet. Super 1 Foods has great deals as it is, but it never hurts to save a couple dollars by cutting out or printing off a couple coupons. Super 1 may not have to best brand names but the products are fresh and they sale everything you need at a great price. Super 1 Foods and discount Pharmacy’s motto sums the store up; “shop. Save. Smile.”

Cedar Trails A Quite Apartment Complex For Students

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

When you are a college student it is easy to find an apartment by the college, but when you have a family you do not want to live in an apartment with a bunch of loud partiers. Cedar Trails Apartments have a great quiet atmosphere but it is not much than a mile from University of Texas in Tyler.

The apartment buildings are older but they are very nice. New houses are being built all around the apartments. One thing when look for when I am looking for a place to live is I see if there are a lot of people walking outside, and if it is safe. While we were looking at these apartments many children were playing basketball in there parking lots, and kids were riding there bikes up to the small play area, which need to be redone.

The apartment complex is extremely safe, and it was surprisingly affordable. Out of all the apartment complexes this was our cheapest option, and it was the closest to the college.

We have been living here for a few months now and, of course, we have had things to complain about, like our refrigerator decided to die when we brought home a couple hundred dollars worth of food. But those things will happen anywhere you decide to live but many apartments will not do anything about it for days or even a week. We called about it at around 10 o’clock at night and they came first thing in the morning.

They happily replaced my refrigerator. One thing I hate about repair men is that they come into your house and not say a thing to you. It makes me feel uncomfortable to have stranger in my house in the first place. But here the maintenance men were very friendly and polite.

The complex allows the people that live there to own animals for a monthly fee. The apartment is very strict about how people manage their animals and that they are not disturbing to neighbors.

The pool is kept really clean and has not been over crowded by half drunks or rough children. The play area is really small and my two year old can not climb up the ladder, and it is pretty scary that there are not very good railings. But there is a great park about a mile away.

Cedar trails has a small workout room, with a few different workout machines, including treadmills and stair masters. If you want to have a different workout out in the great Texan sun, they have a great tennis court.

Cedar Trails has one, two, and three bedroom apartments. Some have laundry machine hook-ups in the hallway closet, but the apartment complex also has a laundry room only for the use of the attendants.

The offices are opened every weekday and every first Saturday. They have many different ways to pay rent each month, and you can talk to a member of the staff if you have any questions. The women that work in the office are very polite and helpful. They are really nice and are great sales women.

Each apartment has a lot of storage space and closet space. And had a lot of room for the money that you are paying. The apartment just started letting the attendances has satellite dishes. The apartment really makes you feel at home in a quiet and safe environment.

I recommend this complex, especially if you are a student at either UTTyler or Tyler’s Junior college, TJC. Also if you are looking for a great location in Tyler it is near great restaurants, Brookshires, Wal-Mart, and many fast food restaurants.

If you are looking for an affordable apartment with great staff, if you are a student or if you have a small family, Cedar Trail is

Flooded House in Tyler TX

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I thought I’d offer a follow up to the article I wrote last week entitled when it rains it pours. Following the third nearly-annual flood at my folk’s house, here in Tyler little over a week ago, the fam and friends gathered to begin yet again the process of clean up. It’s an all too familiar process of scrubbing walls sweeping and mopping repeatedly, and stacking furniture. The whole system is a lot like moving with the added inconvenience of having to clean the mud off of everything before packing it.

On Tuesday the adjustors and the Fire Marshall came to examine the house. It was my parents hope that they (and the insurance company) would simply write off the house. As it turns out, they cannot do that. Now I won’t pretend to understand the ins and outs of the insurance industry, or insurance law, but it seems ridiculous to me that homeowners such as my folks find themselves stuck with a residence that has been through repeated natural disasters for which they were covered.

Their insurance company is not only required to continue carrying them through future floods, but cannot write off their loss! As far as I know they have yet to be offered a settlement, and I obviously wouldn’t disclose what it is here, but from what they understand the only way out of the house is for a someone to buy it, (and whose going to buy a house that’s been flooded three out of the last four years?), or the county to purchase the home condemn it and pay the owners.

The only problem there is that the Smith County officials they spoke to didn’t know anything about that option! Only a call from the insurance officer was able to move things forward at all. So until Smith County decides to come examine the house for themselves, my folks are forced to go forward with the process of making repairs. The unfortunate fact is that the house is beautiful and there is no reason for not wanting to either keep it or buy it, except for the recent propensity for flood, which is definitely a potential deal breaker.

With the recent rain and floods my family is certainly not the only one in Tyler and or Smith County, to find itself stuck with largely unusable real- estate. The Fire Marshall has been visiting flooded areas to get an idea of the effects. Hopefully area victims will respond to city and county’s requests for assistance in taking inventory of area damage as well. It’s not too late to report flood damage to the county. To do so, or for more information, visit the Smith County website at www.smith-county.com.
